About

Doris Cellar is a singer-songwriter from Astoria, Queens, New York. Surrounded by the hustle and bustle of her hometown as a teen, she found escape by experimenting on instruments through songwriting and home-recording. This resulted in her becoming a dynamic multi-instrumentalist whose musical style is broad and encompasses all genres of music.

Doris studied music at the City College of New York. Following graduation she gained popularity in the New York City music scene by writing, recording, and performing in and around the city.

In 2009 she co-founded the band Freelance Whales as the sole female band member. While on tour with Freelance Whales in 2011, she picked up a ukulele in Houston, Texas and wrote a batch of quirky love songs which she later recorded on her roof with her iPhone.

“The first thing you notice is her voice, strong but not forceful, delicate all while being brash, but mostly it sounded really good, almost a bit retro in nature. Then you notice that Doris is a wizard with all the instruments she manages to play all while smiling and dancing”

In January of 2012, she released these songs on Bandcamp as her first full-length solo album entitled "Up on the Roof". Shortly after its release she put out a three song EP called "Windows" which featured some of her older, more electronic style compositions.

After leaving Freelance Whales in 2013, Doris has released numerous singles on her Bandcamp page as well as an EP entitled "Double Vision" in March 2017. She frequently plays live covers and new songs for fans on her Instagram.

When Doris isn't making music, she makes earrings, tie-dyed tapestries and art - as well as performs as a children's folk singer during the day for her company, Tiny Tunes NYC.
